office.to.design docs
What it is
office.to.design converts Office documents and presentations — Word, PowerPoint, Apple Keynote and Pages, OpenOffice and more — into editable Figma designs, through a Figma plugin, a web tool, or the ‹div›RIOTS API.
| Option | Output |
|---|---|
| Figma plugin | Figma layers |
| Web tool | Figma layers via clipboard |
| API | Figma layers, JSON, or PDF |
The Figma plugin requires Figma open; the web tool and API don't. Full output details in Output.
What it does
Drop in a document or presentation. office.to.design rebuilds its visual structure page by page — text, fonts, shapes, tables, and images — as native Figma layers, with each page or slide in its own frame. In a Figma Slides file, a presentation lands as editable slides.
Where it runs
The plugin runs inside Figma — you'll need Figma open to use it (Figma Community). It works in Figma Design, FigJam, and Figma Slides, where each page of a presentation becomes an editable slide.
The web app runs in your browser, at divriots.com/office.to.design — no Figma required, nothing to install. Accepts drag-drop, click-to-browse, or clipboard paste.
The ‹div›RIOTS API runs wherever you call it from — any backend or app that can make an HTTP request. It accepts the Office formats as three suite inputs and returns Figma layers, JSON, or PDF. Metered separately — see Pricing. Full reference: ‹div›RIOTS API documentation.
Supported input formats
22 file formats for the Figma plugin:
| Category | Formats |
|---|---|
| Microsoft PowerPoint | .pot, .potx, .ppt, .pptm, .pptx, .pps, .ppsx |
| Microsoft Word | .doc, .docm, .docx, .dotx, .dot |
| Apple Keynote and Pages | .key, .pages |
| OpenOffice, StarOffice and OpenDocument | .odp, .odt |
| Microsoft Works | .wps |
| WordPerfect | .wpd |
| AbiWord | .abw, .zabw |
| Lotus Word Pro | .lwp |
| Hangul Word Processor | .hwp |
The web tool and the API run on the same ‹div›RIOTS conversion
service, which accepts the Microsoft Office, Apple iWork, and
OpenDocument formats above — 17 in all, grouped under three suite
input ids, msoffice, iwork, and
openoffice (see Output). The
older word-processor formats — WordPerfect (.wpd),
AbiWord (.abw, .zabw), Lotus Word Pro (.lwp) and Hangul (.hwp) — convert in the Figma plugin
only.
Output
Figma plugin options
The output depends on the options selected when converting your file:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Import as | Editable layers, or images |
| File stacking | Arranges the imported pages horizontally, vertically, or in a grid — controls how pages and layers are organized on the canvas. Skipped in a Figma Slides file, where each page becomes its own slide. |
| Page selection (Pro) |
The free tier imports the first 3 pages; importing all
pages, or a specific page range (e.g. 1-5,8),
is a Pro feature.
|
In Images mode, a pixel-density slider sets the raster resolution. After import, any fonts missing from Figma are listed in the import report, where you choose a replacement directly in the plugin.
Each page is converted into a Figma frame. In a Figma Slides file, the pages land as editable slides.
Web tool
The web tool has no prompt and no settings. Drop a file, then copy the result and paste it into Figma as editable Figma layers. The web tool doesn't export HTML.
API
Office documents are passed under one of three suite input ids —
msoffice (Word, PowerPoint, Works), iwork
(Keynote, Pages), or openoffice (OpenDocument) — or the
server detects the suite from the filename. Three output formats are
available for them:
| Output format | What it is |
|---|---|
figma-clipboard | Data to load into the clipboard and paste onto the Figma canvas |
figma-rest | JSON, structurally compatible with the Figma REST API |
pdf | A print-ready PDF, one page per frame, with selectable text and embedded fonts — the office-to-PDF conversion handed back directly, keeping the source document's own page layout |
Full reference: ‹div›RIOTS API documentation.
Editability
| Element | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Pages and slides | Each page or slide is rebuilt as its own frame, laid out and ordered as in the document. In Figma Slides, each becomes an editable slide. |
| Text | Headings, body copy, and labels import as editable Figma text layers, with fonts, sizes, weights, and colors matched. |
| Fonts | Fonts available in Figma carry over. Missing fonts are replaced with a close match, and in the plugin you choose the replacement. |
| Shapes | Boxes and lines import as native Figma vectors and frames, with colors, strokes, and fills preserved. |
| Tables and SmartArt | Rebuilt as native Figma frames and vectors you can edit. |
| Images | Extracted and placed where they belong in the layer tree, and swappable. |
| Charts and embedded media | Extracted and placed in the layer tree. |
| Layout | Headings, bullet lists, and spacing keep their structure as clean, semantic Figma layers. |
This table describes editable-layer output: the plugin's Editable layers import option, the web tool, and the API.
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Animations, slide transitions, and macros | Don't carry over — office.to.design rebuilds the document's visual structure, not the slideshow. |
| Spreadsheets (Excel, Google Sheets) | Not imported as documents. Use data.to.design to bring spreadsheet data into Figma. |
| Google Docs and Google Slides |
Not imported directly. Save a Google Doc as .doc
or .docx, or export Google Slides as a PDF and
use pdf.to.design.
|
| Apple Pages files stored in iCloud |
Download the .pages file locally first — iCloud-only
versions can't be imported directly.
|
| Page selection | The free tier imports the first 3 pages. Importing all pages, or a specific page range, is a Pro feature. |
| Maximum file size | 200 MB on the free tier; up to 2 GB on Pro. |
Privacy & processing
- The Figma plugin, the web app and the API convert your file on the ‹div›RIOTS API. The file is stored only for the processing, then deleted, and never used for training.
-
Anonymous usage analytics are captured (on
api.divriots.com) to improve the experience. - If an import fails, you can choose to send that one file to us for debugging; nothing is uploaded unless you click that button.

FAQ
What file types does office.to.design support?
The Figma plugin takes 22 formats — Word, PowerPoint, Apple Keynote and Pages, OpenOffice and OpenDocument, and older word processors such as WordPerfect and Lotus Word Pro. The web tool and the API run on the conversion service, which covers 17 of them (Microsoft Office, Apple iWork, and OpenDocument). See Supported input formats, above.
Can I convert a PowerPoint to Figma Slides?
Yes — run the plugin in a Figma Slides file and drop in your PowerPoint. Each page is converted into an editable slide. Keynote presentations work the same way.
Can I import a Word document into Figma?
Yes — .doc, .docx, .docm, .dotx, and .dot files import as Figma frames with editable text, images, and layout.
Can I import Apple Keynote and Pages files?
Yes, directly — no PDF conversion needed. Pages files stored only in iCloud need to be downloaded locally first.
Does it work with OpenOffice and StarOffice files?
Yes — .odp and .odt files are supported.
Can I import Google Docs or Google Slides?
Not directly. Save a Google Doc as .doc or .docx and upload it to office.to.design, or export it as a PDF and use pdf.to.design. For Google Slides, export as a PDF and use pdf.to.design.
Can I import Excel or Google Sheets?
Not as documents. data.to.design brings spreadsheet data into Figma so you can fill your designs with real content.
What happens to fonts that aren't in Figma?
They are replaced with a close match. After import, missing fonts are listed in the import report, where you choose the replacement directly in the plugin.
Can I import only specific pages?
The free tier imports the first 3 pages. Importing all pages, or a specific page range, is a Pro feature.
Are layout, text, and images preserved?
Yes — layout, images, text styles, and structure are converted into editable Figma layers.
Are shapes, tables, and SmartArt converted?
Yes — boxes, lines, tables, and SmartArt rebuild as native Figma vectors and frames, with colors, strokes, and fills preserved.
Do animations and slide transitions carry over?
No — animations, slide transitions, and macros don't carry over. office.to.design rebuilds the document's visual structure, not the slideshow.
Can I use office.to.design without Figma?
Yes — the web tool at divriots.com/office.to.design converts documents in your browser — nothing to install, and no need for Figma to be open. Copy the result as Figma layers via clipboard. The ‹div›RIOTS API doesn't need Figma either.
Can I get HTML output instead of Figma layers?
No — office.to.design produces Figma-compatible output: layers via the plugin or the web tool's copy to clipboard, or figma-clipboard, figma-rest, or a print-ready pdf via the API. For HTML output from an image, see image.to.design.
Is there an API for office.to.design?
Yes — the ‹div›RIOTS API accepts Office documents under three suite inputs (msoffice, iwork, openoffice) and returns Figma layers, Figma REST API JSON, or PDF — figma-clipboard, figma-rest, or pdf. See the API documentation for the full reference.
Does it work with Figma's Dev Mode?
Yes — once converted, standard Figma functionality applies, including Dev Mode inspection, prototyping, and component libraries.
Is office.to.design free?
The web tool includes a free trial — your first conversion is free, no credit card required. After that, credit cost varies by document length. The Figma plugin is included in ‹div›RIOTS ONE (see Pricing, above). The API is credit-metered per call.
